Edinburgh

It has a long academic tradition. Napier (discoverer of logarithms) lived in the Edinburgh area. It was the home of the Scottish Enlightenment. Charles Darwin studied here. Scott Russell observed the first recorded soliton wave in a canal outside the city. James Clerk Maxwell was born in Edinburgh, and studied at Edinburgh University. His birthplace now houses ICMS (joint organisers of this conference).
